About Mark Newman
I got my bachelor's degree in music theory from BYU in 1980. That gives you some idea as to how old I am. Somehow I ended up working in the information technology area of the financial industry, but music is my first love. My family and I have moved a lot over the years and I have been fortunate to serve as Ward Choir director in many of the places we have lived.
I very much enjoy arranging hymns for Ward Choirs. Enough people have encouraged me to put my music out there that I have finally put together this little web site. Unlike many composers, I am not a pianist. I went through school playing the cello in both the Mormon Youth Symphony and the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra. Some people have commented that my music is evidence to the fact that I do not play the piano. Be that as it may, I think you will find that these arrangements are both challenging and spiritually satisfying.
Choirs I have worked with have done some ambitious things. We have performed Handel's Hallelujah and other challenging works with Ward Choirs comprised mostly of unskilled performers. I decided to add a section to this web site of some of the things that I have learned along the way in hopes that my experiences might be of some assistance to other ward choir directors out there.
Above all, I love the Lord, I love my family, and I love music. It is my hope that I might contribute in some small way to help others who share the same loves as mine. |
