For this arrangement I added a new melody along with some new text in which the listener pledges to follow the Savior. The piece begins with the sopranos singing the pledge on top of a minor accompaniment, as though still searching for needed faith. Afterwards the altos and basses sing the first verse of the hymn, whereupon the Sopranos, Altos and Tenors sing the pledge in a new key and much brighter. The piece continues with more verses from the hymn and concludes with the tenors singing the pledge juxtaposed within the final verse.
I decided to use the first and the seldom sung last two verses for this arrangement. The final verse provides a powerful conclusion to the entire piece: "Obey His words, come follow me." The entire arrangement is centered around emphasizing this theme. |
