Father in Heaven

Father in Heaven is a prayerful hymn with peace from God our Father as its central theme. The hymn as contained in the hymnal consists of three short verses. This beautiful hymn lends itself well to a capella performance and is full of phrasing opportunities.

This arrangement begins with the full choir singing the first verse with the piano accompaniment incorporating a step-wise base line in quarter notes. In verse two, women sing in three parts and the bass line in the piano shifts to step-wise and arpeggiated triplets. The effect is beautiful, musically interesting, and somewhat challenging as the women are singing in four beats per measure as the piano plays in six. The men sing the third verse in three part harmony while the bass line shifts to running eighth notes. The music adds a lot of strength to the opening phrase, "God of our fathers, strengthen every nation." The arrangement concludes with the full choir quietly singing verse one over again in four parts, unaccompanied.

You will have fun working with this piece. With opportunities for both the men and women to sing three part harmony, a capella singing, a challenging piano part and a verse with two beats against three, there is plenty for everyone to do. Be ready to be both spiritually and musically satisfied.
