Silent Night
SATB, Piano
Challenge Level: Easy to Moderate
Sheet Music Sound File
Silent Night just may be the most well known Christmas carol of all time. Similarly, it might hold the record for the number of arrangements that exist for it. So, why write another one? Because I wanted to. I love this song.
The piano begins by quietly playing rising scales of one and a half octaves and emotes the sensation of stars floating in a quiet sky. The basses gently begin singing the melody until the tenors take over and the basses continue in harmony until the end of the first verse. The key changes and the altos sing the melody to the second verse while the sopranos singing harmony in a duet. The key changes again and the full choir sings the third verse in harmony as it exists in our hymn book. This gives the congregation the opportunity to join the choir if desired. During the third verse the piano returns to the rising one and a half octave scale motif and finishes with a grand three and one half octave scale at the end of the verse. A brief, quiet coda played in the upper register of the piano concludes the arrangement.
A very pretty arrangement of a very lovely Christmas carol. |
